On my journey of identifying as Disabled and facing my internalized ableism, I’ve been having a lot of flashbacks of moments I dismissed ableism as simply annoying, inconvenient, and/or rude.
I had one of these flashbacks a few nights ago.
When I was around 14 my school had a formal (like a dance or something). It took place at a barn or something separate from the school.
My main issue is the tables that were there.
I couldn’t reach the tops of them. Being surrounded by people who could easily put down and pick up their drinks and/or accessories was incredibly lonely.
I’m pretty sure this place is completely decorated by the event thrower (aka my middle school in this instance). This means my school included these tables knowing they had a physically disabled student unable to reach high. (Article(s) on me being one of the only wheelchair user students to come.)
This is not okay.
Disabled people deserve to go to and experience school. We deserve to have the option to go to school events. We deserve to be able to enjoy school events to our fullest extents just like nondisabled people do.
