I posted about this on my Tiktok when it came out, but I wanted to write a whole article about it.
On May 3, 2023 Harry Styles released the music video for his song “Satellite”.
I absolutely love the song, but I have one huge problem with this video: the complete exclusion of wheelchair users.
The first almost 2 minutes of the music video takes place at one of Harry’s concerts.
It shows a bunch of able-bodied and/or nondisabled people dressed in feathery, sparkly, nice outfits. It shows only able-bodied and/or nondisabled people.
Showing only able-bodied and/or nondisabled concert-goers implies no wheelchair users actually go to Harry’s concerts. And that is completely false.
The music video showing only able-bodied and/or nondisabled people adds to the inaccurate narrative that all wheelchair users don’t go out.
Wheelchair users can go out. We can have and spend time with friends and/or significant others. Why not show that?
Wheelchair users are and deserve to be seen in public just as much as able-bodied and nondisabled people.
We are human beings and there is no excuse to ignore our existence.
