Is It Ableism? ("Is It Cake?")

In honor of season 3 of Is It Cake? having coming out

Is It Cake? is a show on Netflix where bakers create hyper-realistic cakes of miscellaneous items.

It’s also another baking show with multiple examples of ableism.

Talking about just season three: Without warning, there is sudden flashing lights in multiple episodes.

Flashing lights can and do bother a lot of people. At the VERY least it can be jarring.

It’s important to include flash warnings at the beginning of episodes. Then, if someone’s seizures or ANYTHING can be triggered by flashing lights, they can avoid that episode.

Or, better yet, don’t include flashing lights at all. Is It Cake? Is a competition show and, in my opinion, every episode is important. Skipping one or more episode(s) can cause confusion. Whether it’s because someone went home or something is said that is later in a callback, skipping episodes could be a problem for some people. Don’t exclude human beings, don’t include flashing lights.

Talking about Is It Cake? as a whole show:

The representation is awful.

There is not a single wheelchair user in this show.

First of all, wheelchair users can be bakers. Believe it or not, it is absolutely possible.

I honestly do not believe there isn’t a single hyper-realistic cake baker that’s also a wheelchair user in the entire world.

Secondly, there ARE wheelchair users in the spotlight/limelight that can be judges.

And an inaccessible set is NOT an excuse to exclude us. Change things about your set. Make an effort to include us. It’s not impossible.

Is It Cake? is one of the MANY baking shows - and shows in general - that have gone multiple seasons and episodes without including any wheelchair users and don’t take accountability. It’s not okay.
